Forward Head Posture Correction in Mission Viejo, CA
The posture your desk gave you — measurable, and correctable.
Forward head posture — sometimes called tech neck — is the forward drift of the head relative to the shoulders that comes from years at a screen. It flattens or reverses the natural curve of the cervical spine, multiplies the load on the neck's discs and joints, and drives headaches, shoulder-blade pain, and arm symptoms. At Foudy Chiropractic in Mission Viejo it is measured objectively on dual postural scales and digital X-ray, then corrected with adjustment, traction, and a corrective exercise program built by Melanie L. Foudy, M.S.
What it feels like
If several of these sound like you, they are worth measuring rather than guessing at.
- A head that sits visibly forward of the shoulders in photos
- Rounded shoulders and a rounded upper back
- Neck and shoulder-blade ache by mid-afternoon
- Headaches from the base of the skull
- Reduced ability to turn the head fully
- Being told you look tired or slouched when you are neither
| Relief | Correction | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Quiet the symptom | Address the cause |
| Typical length | A few visits | A course of care, then maintenance |
| What is included | Adjustment and modalities | Adjustment, modalities, and corrective exercise |
| Re-testing | Not usually | Progress exam against your own baseline |
| Likelihood it returns | Higher | Lower, if the exercise work is done |
What this means for you: both are legitimate choices, and Dr. Foudy will not push you toward the longer one. You just make the choice knowing which one you picked, and what it does and does not buy you.
How it is measured, not eyeballed
You step onto dual postural scales, which detect whether you are weight-bearing more to one side. Head tilt, shoulder level, and pelvic rotation are assessed. Range of motion is measured with a protractor. Then a lateral cervical X-ray shows the actual curve.
This matters because posture correction is one of the easiest things to claim and one of the easiest things to verify. Numbers at the start, numbers at the progress exam.
Correction is a two-part job
The adjustment and cervical traction restore motion and begin restoring the curve. But your desk is still there on Monday, which is why the second half matters more than most people expect.
Melanie L. Foudy holds two master's degrees in exercise physiology and applied kinesiology, has practiced for 34 years, and trains physical therapists. She builds the program that teaches your body to hold the position rather than drift back to it — plus the workstation and habit changes that stop you re-earning it.
In summary: forward head posture at Foudy Chiropractic
- What it is. The posture your desk gave you — measurable, and correctable.
- How it is found. Surface EMG reads nerve-root function level by level, digital X-rays show the structure, and palpation validates both — so the cause is measured rather than guessed at.
- How it is treated. Chiropractic adjustment, the open-floor modalities, and where discs are involved, AccuSpina spinal decompression. Corrective exercise follows so the correction holds.
- What it costs. An adjustment visit is $90 with every modality included. Decompression plans are quoted in person after your exam.
- Where. Foudy Chiropractic, 28892 Marguerite Pkwy #150, Mission Viejo, CA 92692 — (949) 365-0403.
Forward Head Posture — questions people ask
Is forward head posture reversible?
The curve can usually be improved, and how much depends on how long it has been developing and whether degeneration has set in. The progress exam re-measures it, so you get a real answer rather than an assurance.
How is this different from just doing stretches at home?
Stretching a muscle that is compensating for a joint that will not move gives you temporary relief and no correction. The joint has to move first; then the exercise has something to hold.
Does posture actually affect anything besides looks?
It changes how load is distributed through the discs, how well the nerves exiting the neck function, and how much work the muscles do all day. That shows up as headaches, arm symptoms, and fatigue long before it shows up as neck pain.
Can kids and teenagers be treated?
Dr. Foudy sees patients of all ages, and phone posture in teenagers is a genuine and growing issue. Techniques are matched to the patient — a teenager does not get the same adjustment an adult does.
